My Angel Story...
Maybe.
My sister's husband was in France again for work. Every single time he had to go to France, my sister and her children would get sick. GUARANTEED. A few years ago he left for France and.. of course... they all got sick. Even when they were all well again, her son was going through the terrible THREE'S.
(My nephew went through the terrible 3's, not 2's). Mom and I were watching Autumn
(her daughter) at our house while my sister was out with Luke
(her son). All I remember is she wanted us to meet her at Kmart while she picked up the children's new portraits there.
But there was obstacle after obstacle for Mom and I. We got locked out of the car, the house, and then we couldn't get the car seat to fasten correctly. And it was SUMMER, in TEXAS!
(Just think of the fiery bowels of hell to imagine the heat that day). We finally decided something/someone just didn't want us leaving the house. But after that, everything finally worked out and we headed for Kmart.
At the store my mother left us to return a defective vhs tape. My sister and I and the kids were all together. My nephew was being moody again. My sister's nerves were very frazzled by now. Her children were so close in age and her husband was in another country again. Not to mention my sister gets stressed out easily anyway.
So we put the children in the basket and my nephew begins to fuss a bit. My sister begins to push the grocery basket when an old man walks up to us. He was wearing a denim shirt, khaki pants and red suspenders. He also wore glasses, was a little pudgy and was going bald. His eyes were a BEAUTIFUL blue color. The ENTIRE TIME he was there, I could not turn my gaze from his eyes. They were that beautiful. And keep in mind that I don't even like to look people that I personally know in the eye b/c I'm so self-conscious about people looking at me. I kept telling myself to stop staring at his eyes like some psycho, but I couldn't help myself.
The entire time, this old man reserved his attention only for my sister and my nephew. He told my sister that
"children can be a lot of trouble, but that they're also a blessing." When my nephew began to fuss, he said,
"Let me take care of that." Then he rubbed his hand over my nephew's back. My nephew looked up at the man and smiled. The old man then told my sister,
"I put many a baby asleep like that." I can't recall what else he said, but I do remember that the last thing he did was look at my nephew and my niece, followed by telling my sister -
"You've got 2 beautiful ones there." (Or something like that).
My sister and I both immediately suspected that he was no mere Grandpa. We weren't sure, but we both thought him to be an Angel. At least we thought it a strange possibility. We wished that Mom was with us to see him. We even had the insane thought of - "IF he was an Angel, did anyone else in this store see him?"
But here is where it gets WEIRD. I mean WEIRD.
That evening I sat in the living room, writing in the children's journal about the old man. It was late and I was ready for bed, but decided to take one last look at the portraits of the children that we picked up that day at Kmart. I could not believe how daft I had been. I looked at those pictures and noticed that the old man wore the EXACT SAME OUTFIT as my nephew did in the picture - minus the tiny stitched teddy bear on my nephew's collar.

After my nephew's encounter with the man, he was behaving soooo well! The change in his behavior was amazing. I always joked that the change was the result of being "touched by an angel."
Anyway.... just last year Mom brought up something my sister and I have been thinking about ever since that one day at Kmart. She says that the way we describe the old man, it sounds like how Luke would look in old age. Blue eyes, balding (like his Grandpa), the tiniest bit "pudgy (like his Grandpa). She says the man could have been Luke's angel, spirit guide, or himself as an old man. Whoever he was, there's no doubt that he was there to comfort my sister during a very stressful time.
Personally, I have a hard time accepting
'Luke, the Time Traveler.'

But at the same time I can DEFINITELY see how my nephew would like that man once he reaches old age. But if that were true.... how come he ignored me? Me, his favorite aunt!
What do you all think?
