Can we be taught mediumship or is a natural ability. what do you all think about this wonderful subject of mediumship etc

hugs sky xxx
Adrienne
I think it's a bit of both. Some people are born with the natural ability to see and hear spirit, and may have a hard time accepting this as they get older. When they are taught how to accept and respect spirit, it helps enormously. Those who think they cannot contact spirit, are often surpised at how well they can do it once they have been taught how to recognise and feel spirit. I have seen people attend circles in the Spiritualist Church who were adamant that they had no psychic and mediumship ability. Just sitting week after week, and tuning into their senses made a huge difference.

Great topic Sky smile.gif

My feeling is that everyone has the ability to be taught mediumship, as long as they're willing to work and develop it.

I think the thing that interferes the most with this natural ability is fear, sometimes coming from our parents when we're being raised, from certain religious groups, from the people around us, etc. I think it makes a big difference how the subject was treated when we were children. If the subject was openly discussed and respected then it would be easier to access the ability. If we're told it's evil, the work of the devil, etc., we can still develop it, but it will probably take longer for us to shed the baggage that comes with that attitude.

I think that it is a little bit of both.

I think that the ability comes natural but like lifesjourney touched on, if as children we are seeing things and we are constantly told it is our imagination and such we tend to push that ability to the background.

I know as a child I would see, feel, hear, and smell things and it would be sluffed off as imagination or bad dreams ect. When I found this forum I started opening up more and relaxing more about talking about the experiences that I have had and I have noticed a change in the way they I view my experiences and I no longer push them to the side as just my imagination or a bad dream.

I try not to do this with my children. If they have an experience I encourage them to talk about it and tell me how they felt, what it was that happened ect.

It's hard for me to answer this because I am a natural medium. I don't know what it would be like to not be a medium and try to learn to be one. It's hard enough figuring it out when you have the natural ability. What helped me the most was meeting another strong medium who was more developed than I. He verified a lot of things for me and he helps me recognize and understand the things I experience. I didn't even realize I was a medium. I knew I could hear, sense and sometimes see spirits and I could tell when I was in a haunted building/place but I didn't know I could communicate with them or influence them until recently. I've been very sensitive to the leading of my guides throughout my life but I didn't recognize them as my guides until recently either. So I guess you can be a natural medium and not understand it, meaning you still have to learn it. But knowing what I know so far, I would say that if you don't have natural mediumship abilities, you're probably not going to get very far if you try to make yourself into a medium. That doesn't mean you wouldn't have other psychic abilities. I think it's important to identify and find out the level of all your abilities, then focus on developing the ones you have rather than trying to obtain skills you don't have. If you have stronger abilities than the average person, you have been given these skills for a reason and they should be developed. Of course, everyone can increase their sensitivity to spirit. I'm just saying that to reach the level of a true medium I think you really have to have a higher than average natural ability for this. I can tell when I meet a psychic or medium who is "book taught" as opposed to one who is "spirit taught." The ones who are book taught have gaps in their understanding that can only be filled by being spirit taught. Can they reach a level where they will eventually become spirit taught? Perhaps. I can't say for sure. So this is my ramble... character71.gif

This is an interesting thread and I'm grateful for its appearance now as it's something I think about a lot. I was at one time sitting in circle to develop skills but felt that the atmosphere and teacher just wasn't right for me (and plus I was extremely impatient and wanting to know how well I was developing haha.gif I only thrive through feedback!) The teacher was very good, I know this, but just not for me. I think I am not a natural medium but a lot can be achieved through meditation and a conscious desire daily to connect to the universe through some kind of stillness, wherever you are. This is also my ramble, lol.

I think both as well,...I believe we are all born with this ability, it just fades over time, like the saying goes.."ya dont use it, ya lose it"..or we are taught to NOT believe we have this ability...so if ya tell yourself long enough then ya start to believe that you do not have the ability and it isnt as strong.

Reason i say this is that is a bit what happened to me, i remember having alot of different abilities when I was a young child and growing up, but I was told to ignore them or to even not speak up about them and I taught myself to just deal with it and most times try and block it out...so the ablitities either faded or I just ignored them and learned to live with it that way.

Of course now I understand how to control this and I welcome it, but I do wonder just how much I could of learned back then if the ppl around me would of accepted this and helped me along?
I believe I still have alot of these abilities, I just need to dig a bit and pull them back up and realize them, I hope to do that someday soon in my life, well when my life slows a bit that is.

I also believe ppl can be taught if they believe and open their minds to it...smile.gif

I think attending a spiritualist church greatly helps those who feel they have no or little ability, to communicate at a reasonable level with spirit: or at least recognise when they are experiencing spirit. Those of us who have been born a natural medium have benefitted from the discipline taught by the circles.

Fantastic post sky....I believe it's both as well even though I wouldn't consider myself close to a medium. Had my share of interesting things but that's about as far as it's gone. I think that's why I ask so many questions on this board to help me in any small way to cultivate what I may have into something more. I'd love4.gif to find a group to get involved with to learn more but I'm a little on the shy side. Maybe in time..

wow another great post!!!
I too feel it is a bit of both...I have never really thought of my son as a medium ...but I have thought of myself as being taught by him...more in the way of meanin I learn from him how to be more open about the possibilities of myself being one because of my won experiences.....
For Cody this is just second knowledge for me its a learning experience daily....kwim?
Adrienne I agree with what u said about "attending a spiritualist church greatly helps those who feel they have no or little ability" I say this because raised in a very spiritual home, surrounded by christianity I was more open to the fact that their is definatly a spirit world out there.....even though my mother may have had different beliefs...LOL
